The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been criticized for being unduly tribalistic by Dr. Kobby Mensah, a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS).
The lecturer claimed that the NPP is the only party in Ghana that links its ideas with the nation's tribes in a tweet posted on Monday, August 17, 2022.
"NPP continues to act destructively. How much of tradition is unique to a tribe? How is the Dombo tradition restricted to the North, Danquah to the Kyebi, and Busia to the Ashanti? I've never heard of Nkrumah for south Ghana or Nzema. Only in the NPP does tradition equate to tribe, according to some of the tweets Dr. Mensah shared. The lecturer also questioned why some party sections are allegedly referring to exclusively Northerners in a statement allegedly made by former Deputy National Security Coordinator in Charge of Airports, Hopeson Adorye.
"Why target Northerners with Hopson's analysis?" remarked Dr. Kobby Mensah.
According to reports, the NPP Vice President position is only open to residents of the Northern Region, according to Hopeson Adorye, a prominent supporter of Alan Kyerematen's campaign.
There is one thing I am going to say, Mr. Adorye allegedly remarked as he led a walk in Kumasi known as a "Walk for Alan." The NPP follows a custom. We follow the Busia, Danquah, and Dombo traditions. Danquah is the embodiment of the Eastern Region, the Bottom (South), the Ashanti Region, and the Bono regions, while Dombo is the embodiment of the Northern Region.
He continued: “whenever a Dankwa leads the party, the Busia side steps aside but there is a Dombo and whenever a Busia lead, the Dankwa side steps aside but there is a Dombo. As for the Dombos, they are always there.”
Other members of the party including former organiser hopeful of the party, Musah Superior have attacked Adorye for the comments he made.
In a statement, Musah Superior asked Mr. Adorye to "retract his divisive, despicable and derogatory remarks on northerners and render an unqualified apology to all NPP members of northern extraction and to the Party largely".
