Three pupils in their last year at Opoku Ware Senior High School have been detained for alleged participation in a robbery in Kumasi. According to Ashanti Central Divisional Command sources, the three students, aged 17 to 19, failed in their effort to rob a taxi cab from its driver on Friday night. The suspects were picked up in the Santasi area by the driver. The passengers approached him under the guise of going to the Lancaster Kumasi City, formerly Golden Tulip Hotel, in the Nhyiaeso district. However, after they arrived to Rattray Park, the three convinced the driver to hand up the ignition keys or risk being stabbed. The suspects and the driver engaged in a battle for the keys. The truck eventually collided with a wall between the Ridge Police Station and the Royal Golf Park Junction.
This drew the attention of bystanders from a neighboring bar, who came to the cab driver's rescue.
One of the students left the scene, while the other two were apprehended and turned over to police. The third suspect was apprehended from his hiding after the Kumasi Central Police command conducted an investigation. Meanwhile, command officials and Opoku Ware School administrators have declined to comment on the incident.
