UEW, UG, and other universities are named among the universities engaging in the fee increment illegality

UEW, UG, UCC, KNUST and other universities have been named among the universities engaging in the fee increment illegality. UG(100%), UCC(27%), UMaT(40%), KNUST(90%),

The National Union of Ghana Students held a press conference today 28th of December 2022 to express their displeasure with some universities who have defied the directive of GTEC to stay within the 15% threshold in increasing fees for the 2022/2023 academic year.

According to the Union, University of Ghana is leading these illegalities as some departments in the university have gone errant to increase fees at 40%, 70%, and 100% in some worst-case scenarios.

The president of the Union Dennis Appiah Larbi-Ampofo, emphatically mentioned Prof. Nana Aba Amfo and cited her to be in charge of this illegality in fee increment. To him, the union will continue to pursue the best interest of students and make students' comfort their priority.

They are ready to bare teeth with any university that will deliberately make the lives of students unbearable.

KNUST is not in exception of these illegal fee increment according to the Union. Larbi mentioned in his address to the media Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson under whose supervision these unfair charges are placed on students to pay as both academic fees and residential fees.

“ Dear Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosu Dickson, our attention has been brought to the hard-to-believe fees increment over 90% in Academic Facility User Fees (AFUF) and 100% in Residential Facility user fee in your institution. This is not only hard to believe but very worrying to be coming from university like KNUST. Madam professor, you have no right to charge students fees in excess to the 15%”.

The University of Cape Coast was cited to be among the unpopular decision of excess fee increments. The university has increased fees for some departments and faculties by more than the 15%. UCC is treading on 27% and 25% increments.

The faculty of Social Sciences has increased its fees by 27% more than the 15% threshold.

“UCC is also involved in some increment of about 25%. As we speak, UCC’s Faculty of Social Sciences has increased its fees by 27%” - he disclosed.

The President further signaled that, even though UEW is yet to release its fees for continuing students yet, the fresh students have been hit with a 40% fee increment and the same for the graduate students referring to the MPhil for special education.

UMaT is also engulfed in these illegalities concerning the fee increment. They have also increased fees by 40%.

“UMaT is also doing same with increment as high as 40%.

University of Eduaction is doing same in charging first-year students in an increment up to 40% while we awaits the release of continuous students, it is unfortunate to note that fees for graduate students in some instances go up to 40%.

With MPhill  for special education being raised up to 40%” -he said.
