The University of Ghana's first female graduate was Elizabeth Frances Baaba Sey. The momentous achievement was made by her in 1953, just four years before Ghana gained independence. In 1950, the late Frances Sey was accepted into the Bachelor of Arts program at what was then the University College of the Gold Coast. After completing her secondary education at Accra's Achimota School, she did this. She was the first female graduate of the University of Ghana from Ghana. One of the university's halls bears her name in recognition. In the legon campus, Elizabeth Sey Hall is located among the row of hostels. In 2011, the 400-room hall was built as a way to recognize her contributions to the institution.
Family life
Former Barclays Bank Ghana Limited chairman Mr. Samuel Sey was married to the late Elizabeth Frances Sey. During the time, Mr. Sey also served as the University of Ghana Council's chairman.
The couple had two kids before passing away in the same year, 1991.
Her career as a teacher in girls' schools
She entered the Western region of Sekondi as the Education Officer after graduating. Prior to her retirement in 1987, the late Elizabeth Sey oversaw the English Department at the Achimota School. She worked as a teacher at a variety of girls' institutions, including Saint Louis Secondary School in Kumasi and Wesley Girls' High School in Cape Coast.
