The terrible tragedy that took place between Kintampo and Babatokuma in the Bono East Region on Sunday evening has already claimed 23 lives.
21 of the victims passed away immediately, while two more passed away at the Kintampo Government Hospital, where the injured were taken for treatment. A Kintampo resident who saw the collision has confirmed to Graphic Online's Emmanuel Adu-Gyamerah that a Grandbird bus going for Yendi-Kumasi with the license plate AS 4635 - 22 and a vehicle with the license plate GW 1127 - P were both engaged in it. The resident claims that the accident happened on Sunday night about 11 p.m.
In an effort to avoid colliding with another automobile that was parked on the road, the articulated truck swerved off its lane and into the path of the bus, the witness claimed.
In the end, 22 passengers were killed and numerous others were hurt when the bus collided with the articulated truck. According to the local, the accident. happened on a stretch of road between Kintampo and Babatokuma. The deceased, according to the resident, have been taken to the Kintampo Government Hospital's morgue, where the injured are also being treated. The two drivers of the two automobiles who are reportedly alive after the collision are being held by police.
Kwasi Adu-Gyan, the Bono East Regional Minister, visited the accident scene in the meantime to inspect the situation.
He voiced concern about the frequent accidents at that section of the Kintampo-Tamale route while commenting on the tragedy.
To prevent these accidents, according to Mr. Adu-Gyan, it was necessary to enact a law requiring long-distance vehicles to make a mandatory rest break in Kintampo. The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), the Ghana Shippers Council, and the Bono East Regional Coordinating Council were already in discussions for such a policy, he continued. Mr. Adu-Gyan reported that 25 people were being treated at the Kintampo Government Hospital for various injuries while 23 people have already passed away.
He stated that to tell the families of the deceased and the injured, representatives of the Ghana Road Transport Union in Kintampo had coordinated with their counterparts at Yendi in the Northern Region.
