At least five people were killed in a Volta Lake accident on Saturday when the boat they were traveling in capsized at Azizakpe in the Ada East District of the Greater Accra Region.
According to information obtained by Graphic Online, the victims were on their way from Azizanya to Azizakpe, an over-bank community, for a funeral when the accident occurred.Strong winds are said to have caused the incident, which occurred around 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2023. Gifty Mamle Agbasi, a survivor, stated that no one on the canoe was wearing a life jacket.
According to her, there were no life jackets onboard, and the canoe carried no cargo other than two crates of drinks. We were more than the boat's capacity, and the operator told us that nothing would happen, she said.
She added that the boat capsized a few minutes after they set off, but she was fortunate to be saved by some rescuers who rushed in with canoes.
