Christian Atsu, the late Black Stars player, is being laid to rest on the State House forecourt. Football fans from all over the world are expected to gather at the State House to express their condolences and pay their respects to Atsu's family. Attendees are expected to include members of the entertainment industry, politicians, and people from all walks of life. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023, killing the footballer.
Atsu's lifeless body was recovered from the wreckage of an 11-story building that collapsed on him and others in Turkey. On Sunday, February 19, 2023, his body was returned to Ghana from Turkey.
Since then, government officials, football players, colleagues, supporters, and Ghanaians in general have spoken out.He signed a permanent deal in May 2017 after spending the 2016-17 season on loan at Newcastle United. After his four-year contract expired, he moved on to play for Al Raed in Saudi Arabia and Hatayspor in Turkey, where he died at the age of 31 in the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake.
Atsu was a full international with 65 caps from 2012 to 2019, representing Ghana at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
He contributed to the team's second-place finish in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
