 In Australia, a new and "rare" species of enormous trapdoor spider has been identified. Because of its "amazing" size, the enormous eight-legged spider has been dubbed "Euoplos dignitas," which means "dignity or greatness" in Latin.

Female spiders, which are normally larger than males, can reach up to five centimetres in body length, according to researchers.


"It's a large, lovely species," said Dr Michael Rix, curator of arachnology at Queensland Museum and one of the primary researchers. According to scientists, the chances of encountering the spider are relatively minimal. The spider dwells in open woodland environments and burrows in the black soils of the Brigalow Belt in Central Queensland, Australia's northeastern coast. Unfortunately, over 150 years of human activity have split these woodlands, resulting in some of Queensland's most threatened biological ecosystems. According to researchers, the spider, which may live up to 20 years in the wild, has lost much of its habitat due to land clearing, making it likely an endangered species. It is only known to exist in a few isolated sites between the rural villages of Eidsvold and Monto. Female spiders of the new species, according to Dr. Rix, spend their lives underground, while male spiders, described as "honey-red," emerge their burrows after five to seven years to locate a mate.

The spiders are usually active at night, sitting at their tunnel trapdoors waiting for insects to pass before striking out. They subdue their victim using venom. Dr. Rix, on the other hand, claims that they are not harmful to humans. Dr. Rix stated in a video announcing the discovery that the specialists were excited to "scientifically document this new species."

According to Dr. Jeremy Wilson, research assistant in arachnology with the Queensland Museum Network, designating the new species has real-world benefits since "it can be safeguarded."

The study was funded by Project DIG, a five-year collaboration between the Queensland Museum Network and the mining company BHP.
