Since its discovery in 1982, the opening in 2019 was the tiniest ever observed.It's one of the biggest success stories in human history. Though it hasn't yet ended.A year after the terrible megafires that destroyed 60 million acres of flora in Australia, the hole above Antarctica started to widen once more in 2021.And it's not likely a coincidence.According to a recent study on the recent megafires in Australia, smoke particles in the stratosphere might significantly weaken the ozone layer for more than a year. The particles might possibly grow more harmful as they get older.The results contribute to the understanding of why there appears to be such a lag effect in the thickening of the ozone layer after wildfire activity.More than a million tons of smoke were released into the sky as a result of the fires in Australia in 2019–2020.But it wasn't until August 2020 that researchers realized the ozone hole was expanding quickly.
According to current estimates, smoke particles have increased the size of the ozone hole by almost 2.5 million square kilometers by September, making it 10% larger than the previous year.Prior ozone recovery forecasts did not take into account the impact of wildfires. And I believe that impact could change if fires intensify and increase in frequency as the earth warms.The top four greatest wildfires in human history have occurred in within the last two decades across both hemispheres.The greatest flames ever recorded were in Russia's Siberian Taiga in 2003. There were 55 million acres destroyed. Australian bushfires, which occurred more recently, are a close second.Solomon is driven to learn more.
