On Thursday, March 16, 2023, members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defense and Interior paid a working visit to Ashaiman. The visit comes after the death of a soldier, Sherif Imoro, 21, who was allegedly killed by a gang on Saturday, March 4, 2023.
In what appeared to be retaliation, some military men stormed Ashaiman on Tuesday, March 7 2023 to look for the soldiers' killers, and residents were subjected to beatings in what they later explained was an intelligence-led swoop.
The military apprehended 184 Ashaiman residents, subjected them to severe beatings, and then released them. The police later arrested six people, who are currently in custody after a court remanded them in connection with the soldier's death. However, some members of the public expressed concern about how the military that arrived in Ashaiman town subjected the residents to brutality and condemned the brutality. The Committee's Chairman, Kennedy Ohene Agyepong, stated that the visit was to familiarize the Committee with the incident. The delegation, which included Defense Minister Dominic Ntiwul, first paid a visit to the deceased soldier's family in Zongo Laka, where they commiserated with the soldier's parents.
