The police have arrested four alleged illegal miners who were seen beating police officers in a video. According to a police statement made by the Public Affairs Directorate on Sunday, April 2, 2023, the operation was carried out in response to a report on several officers of the Axim Divisional Police patrol team. According to the police statement, the four arrested people grabbed a service rifle magazine as well as some police officers' mobile phones. The four were detained for their alleged involvement in the attack: Kojo Siah alias Mozey, Emmanuel Mensah alias Kofi Asamoah, Maxwell Cudjoe, and Agyabu Haruna Dissawu.
"On March 28, 2023, a search at the home of Kwame Ato Asare Ani, the lead suspect who is currently on the run, yielded three (3) pump-action shotguns." One (1) pump-action shotgun, (2) machetes, and eight (8) BB refilled cartridges were also recovered inside the suspects' unregistered Honda RV van. Additional goods recovered from the suspects included two (2) live refilled BB cartridges and one (1) unregistered motorbike."
According to the statement, "while the investigations to arrest the remaining suspects were ongoing, the Police's attention was drawn to a video footage in which they said Police personnel, members of the Axim Patrol team, are shown pleading with members of the gang while the gang is alleging extortion by the police officers." According to the police, the extortion claim against the policemen has been sent to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigation.
