Wednesday, April 19 (Reuters) - The Russian private military group Wagner Group stated that it had nothing to do with the battles that were rocking the enormous, impoverished African nation and denied that it was operating in Sudan.In March 2022, Western diplomats in Khartoum stated that, among other activities, Wagner was involved in illegal gold mining in Sudan. Sudan refuted this claim."We consider it necessary to inform everyone that Wagner staff have not been in Sudan for more than two years," the group wrote in a Telegram post. "Due to the large number of inquiries from various foreign media about Sudan, most of which are provocative," the group wrote. Wagner had not had contacts for quite a while with either Sudan's tactical ruler, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, or paramilitary boss General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, whose powers are at the core of the ongoing clash, it said.
Organizations related with Wagner organizer Yevgeny Prigozhin have no monetary interests in Sudan, it added, saying the contention was a simply inward Sudanese undertaking.Wagner mercenaries, who have previously been employed against rebels in Mali and the Central African Republic, are currently leading efforts to seize Bakhmut, a city in eastern Ukraine.
