Maria Rioba Musa, who was 50 years old at the time, never anticipated that she would return home in January to find her husband irate and savagely attacking her. She had left their home in January to attend a funeral. Musa, who hails from the county of Migori in the settlement of Tarang’anya, Kenya, traveled to attend the burial of a family member and remained there for three days. Her husband, Musa Matiko, was waiting for her at home with a panga, which is a type of machete, and demanded to know why she had taken such a long time to return, leaving him without a chef in the meantime. According to the accounts of the local media, he then proceeded to cut off her left hand.

According to the story, Matiko also stabbed Musa in the forehead, attempted to sever Musa’s right hand, but was unsuccessful. She also hurled a spear at Musa’s stomach.

“I was able to attend the burial for three days before I finally had to leave. After I returned back from my trip, he questioned me about who I believed would be preparing meals for him while I was gone for those three days. “In the past, whenever we got into an argument, he would even beat me up with a rod; but, on that particular occasion, he beat me up with a panga,” the victim recalled. Musa reportedly demanded that charges be issued against her husband when she was receiving therapy and surgery at the St. Joseph Omboo Mission Hospital. She also underwent treatment and surgery there. It was verified by the Commander of the Migori Police Department, Joseph Nthenge, that the Migori Police Department would pursue criminal charges against Matiko even though Musa had not filed an official complaint with the department.

After the event, it was reported that Matiko had fled the scene. There have been no reports made public that confirm whether or not Matiko was located and brought to justice for his crime. It appeared as though Matiko did not contribute to the home in any way.
