The United States thrashed Ghana's Black Princesses 3-0 in their first game at the U-20 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica. The Black Princesses were reduced to 10 players for the majority of the game after midfielder Jacqueline Owusu was sent off in the 31st minute. Ghana is now at the bottom of Group D and faces missing out on the knockout stage for the first time.
The United States dominated Ghana for the majority of the game, with significantly better pass accuracy and possession than the latter, and thus won 3-0.
The Americans got off to a quick start in their first match, with Michelle Ivory Cooper scoring in the 11th minute to put the team ahead.
The two teams then fought hard and tested each other's defenses, and it appeared that the first half would end with no goals until Alyssa Paola Thompson sneaked through the Ghana defense to extend the USA's lead to 2-0.
Alysson Marie Sentnor scored the team's third goal in just six minutes to give the USA a similar start to the second half.
Ghana then attempted to cut the USA's commanding lead, but were unable to do so due to the USA defense's excellent work in preventing them from scoring.
Ghana's next match is against Japan on Sunday.
