Architecture students at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have created a sustainable building system to address Ghana's housing issues.
The system, devised by level 300 university students, aims to minimize the cost of building a house for different income groups in the country by utilizing native building materials such as bamboo, laterite, rammed earth, and others.
On August 30, 2022, the students' innovative mixed-use residential development was on display to the public in the exhibition hall of the Travellion Block, KNUST.
According to a proposal document obtained by OTEC News on Friday, September 9, 2022, students from the Department of Architecture designed the dwelling system after a two-week field research at Ejisu.
"Ghana's population is increasing, putting heavy demands on our finite resources; thus, there is a need to encourage high density mixed-use development to reduce carbon footprints on the environment," according to one section of the statement.
According to the document, the system built by KNUST students was intended to contribute back to their country as part of their civic obligation.
