The Ghana Police Service has begun an investigation into an audio recording that shows some policemen reportedly placing substances suspected to be cocaine in a member of the public's vehicle. According to the police, as part of their inquiry, they contacted the Dangerous Drugs Commission and the Ghana Armed Forces, although both institutions denied knowledge of the occurrence. According to a news release dated January 17, 2023, preliminary checks at the locations named in the tape, East Legon and Accra Central Police Stations, revealed that no such complaint had been lodged.
“The attention of the Police Service has been drawn to an audio tape in which it is alleged some Police officers planted substances suspected to be narcotics in a vehicle of a member of the public and attempted to extort money from him.
“The Police Administration initiated an investigation into the matter immediately, and our early checks at the stations named in the tape, East Legon and Accra Central Police Stations, revealed that no such complaint had been lodged there.
"As part of the investigation, the Police have also contacted the Narcotics Control Commission and the Ghana Armed Forces, and both organizations have reported that no such incidence has come to their attention," according to a section of the report.
The statement further added that the service does not condone any unprofessional conduct in its quest to become an institution worthy of respect and trust in the country.
