According to environmental researchers and industry players, Ghana loses approximately $100 million each year in Accra due to flooding. They explain that the government can avoid this situation if it prioritizes plastic waste management in the country.

According to a United Nations Environment Programme report, global plastic production has surpassed 9.2 billion tonnes since 1950.

Dr. Ebenezer Laryea, a researcher and senior lecturer at the University of Northampton, called on the government to "spearhead a massive behavioral change drive to help reduce the use of plastics and their related pollution of the environment" on the sidelines of a stakeholder discussion on how to address the plastic waste menace in Ghana, an initiative by Blue Skies Limited and the University of Northampton to find circular economic solutions to plastics.
