The National Cathedral Project has been the subject of a motion that the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has accepted.
This came after a Private Members' Motion that was supported by a number of people, including Deputy Minority Leader Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah and Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson.
A committee would be established "to conduct an inquiry into the National Cathedral of Ghana project and all associated circumstances," according to the motion.
The committee will then provide recommendations for consideration by the House.
Other National Democratic Congress (NDC) lawmakers who supported the motion include Minority Chief Whip Kwame Governs Agbodza, Dr. Dominic Ayine, an MP from Bolgatanga East, Helen Ntoso, an MP from Krachi West, and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, an MP from North Tongu.
The change occurs roughly a month after two esteemed clergymen and board members of the contentious National Cathedral project demanded that it be suspended immediately and that a financial audit be conducted.
The project's controversies, according to Archbishop Duncan Williams and Rev. Eastwood Anaba, are the basis for their call.
They claim that the suspension will open the door for the Ghanaian people to receive openness and accountability.
Since President Akufo-Addo originally announced the project, the National Cathedral Project has been one of the most divisive national issues.
Regarding some project-related expenses, the Secretary of the Board, Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, has also been charged with conflict of interest.
There have been worries regarding the project's relevancy in light of the nation's economic crisis in addition to the accountability issues that the Minority in Parliament has constantly brought up.
Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, the creator of the LightHouse Chapel International, resigned from the Board of Trustees of the Cathedral in August 2022 as a result of the myriad problems.
By doing this, the preacher abstained from giving a cause for the man of God's departure, leaving the general people to make up their own theories and conjectures
In the meantime, President Akufo-Addo has repeatedly asserted that he will construct the cathedral despite objections from the general populace.
