A video that went viral on social media on Saturday, April 8, 2023, showed some young men beating a police officer in Kumawu, Ashanti area. It was previously reported that the struggle between the cop and the young lads was over a rat carcass. However, the Ghana Police Service stated in an official statement obtained by GhanaWeb that the incident occurred after the cab transporting the young men was stopped at the checkpoint for a search. In an attempt to prevent the officer from carrying out his responsibilities due to their crime - overloading - the suspects seized on him and attacked him.

"The attention of one of the three police officers who were on duty at the checkpoint was drawn to a cab that was overcrowded with seven male adults. As a result, he pulled over and requested that the automobile be searched. However, in an attempt to prevent the officer from checking the car, the suspects seized on him and aggressively attacked him "The police statement read in part. According to the police, the attacked officer and one of the suspects suffered knee injuries and were brought to the hospital for treatment. The Ghana Police Service has identified the accused as Edward Boateng, Evans Addo, Yaw Kusi, Michael Owusu, Yaw Boateng, and Emmanuel Mensah. One more suspect is on the run, according to the police.
