In a recent development, campus politics have been permanently banned by the Office of the Electoral Commissioner of the Students' Representative Council (SRC) at the University of Education, Winneba-Ajumako. The statement was given by Carlos Klaye, the SRC election commissioner, on April 5, 2023, on Wednesday. The university community and students have responded to this choice.
Rachael Yawo Komabu's announcement states that the prohibition on university politics is in place with immediate effect. The Election Commission made the judgment, citing factors such the interference with academic activity, the chaos and violence that frequently accompany political campaigns, and the emergence of divisions and discord among students. All political activity, including the creation of political parties, holding political gatherings, and displaying political signs and slogans, are now prohibited. The Office of the Electoral Commissioner has informed pupils that disciplinary action will be taken against them if they violate this rule.
The student body has reacted to this choice in a variety of ways. While some students have praised the decision, arguing that it will support academic activities and help prevent violent disputes, others have condemned it, contending that it infringes on their right to freedom of association and expression. The university authorities have not yet commented on this development. However, students are hoping that the ban will be lifted soon, and that they will be allowed to participate in campus politics once again.
