Onyekachi Agu, a 32-year-old carpenter, was convicted of pouring acid on his ex-girlfriend Aishat Adefarati and her new love Monsuru Ahmed. He was given a sentence of seven years in prison.According to reports, Agu committed the crime because he could not bear the suffering of his lover, for whom he had paid a lot of money; after he went bankrupt, she left him for another man. He is said to have followed them as they were leaving the restaurant, poured acid on them, and then hurriedly fled the scene, leaving them to their own devices.According to the Nigerian News Agency, Justice Oyindamola Ogala insisted that the prosecution proved Agu's one-count grievous harm charge.Mrs. Ogala said that Agu's withdrawal of his confession booth explanation was an endeavor to lie and get away from discipline.She claims that the defendant did not bring his brother, whom he claimed to have been with on the day of the incident, to court. The judge stated, "The defendant tried to mislead the court by claiming to have been with his brother on the said day, but he failed to corroborate his evidence by giving the date and day he visited him." The defendant claimed to have been with his brother on that day.
"His 'sibling' who he attempted to use as a justification, was mysteriously gone to give proof under the watchful eye of this court. The defendant never refuted the use of corrosive substances on the victims. Mrs. Ogala stated that the prosecution's case was based on circumstantial evidence, and that "the victims showed to the court, the level of damage to their bodies." The defendant's action was considered to be intentional.“After three years of being together, the defendant's former lover's testimony about how he had harassed and assaulted her led to their breakup."Considering the proof under the watchful eye of the court, I thusly view the litigant to be liable of the charge against him, and he is thus condemned to seven years prison term," Mrs. Ogala said.The convict, in his supplication for benevolence, let the court know that he was grieved, and asked Ahmed, who was available in court, to pardon him.During the trial, Agu testified as the sole witness for the defense, while the prosecution presented four witnesses and offered a number of pieces of evidence.The carpenter, according to the prosecution, committed the crime on July 3, 2020, at the Gangare Hotel in Mile 12 of Lagos.After following Aishat and her new partner to the hotel, the prisoner poured acid on them.
