The Accra Zoological Gardens, often known as Accra Zoo, will shortly house the tigers imported into the country by Cheddar, a businessman, less than a year ago. Cheddar, real name Nana Kwame Bediako, stated that he imported the two tigers into the country to increase the value of tourism. However, the two cubs were transferred by the police and the Forestry Commission's Wildlife Division.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Paul Addah, Zoo Manager, stated, "Very soon we will have the tigers that were with Cheddar, they will be brought into the facility very soon."
He, however, declined to remark on the animals' whereabouts. Mr Addah stated that the Zoo's management intended to increase the number of species depending on their ecological behavior and acceptance.
"As a zoo, we keep species for the entertainment and leisure of our guests, but we also breed and reintroduce them into the ecosystems," he explained. Mr Addah stated that management will continue to thank both local and foreign guests for their patronage, and that they would seek to increase revenue. The zoo currently houses 30 different animal species and over 160 individual species. The Zoo had a total of 45, 000 visits in 2022. This year, from January to now, the facility has received approximately 11, 000 visitors and 6,000 visitors for the month of March alone.
The Zoo has undergone significant growth in terms of recreational facilities and animal and visitor safety. There is room for celebrations such as holidays, picnics, and birthdays.
