The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) is considering banning sprinter and other minibuses from carrying passengers if the road crashes in which they are involved continue.
According to the Authority, a series of avoidable crashes involving such vehicles occurred as a result of some drivers' flagrant disregard for road traffic regulations, particularly along the Takoradi-Cape Coast Mankessim Accra highway. According to the Authority, drivers frequently compete for passengers along the stretch, racing at high speeds and endangering the lives of passengers and other road users.
On Thursday, January 13, 2023, two sprinter minibuses traveling from Takoradi and Mankessim to Accra collided near Gomoa-Antseadze near Apam.
Fourteen people were on board the minibuses of which seven died on the spot while the other seven including an infant who sustained an injury.
The accident occurred when the bus from Takoradi on reaching Gomoa -Antseadze tried to overtake the other bus but veered off the road and summersaluted into a bush leaving the passengers trapped.
The victims are currently receiving treatment at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist hospital. The Road Safety Authority has urged drivers and road users to adhere to basic road safety signs to reduce accidents.
