According to Adom News journalist Akwasi Dwamena, who was cited by myjoyonline.com, seven galamseyers have been confirmed dead when the illegal small-scale mining mine they were working in fell on them in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region. According to the report, 17 more people are still under the rubble and have dwindling chances of being rescued. Locals have volunteered and are using all available resources to help in the rescue operations.
Only two of the trapped miners, though injured, had been extracted safely. The seven dead miners' bodies were left out in the open, and Akwasi Dwamena said that their remains were hidden by shrubs. As the damaging effects on water bodies continue, the Ghanaian government's ongoing fight against illegal mining, often known as galamsey, intensifies. The nation's water supplies are at jeopardy since the government has tried a variety of tactics to stop these illegal activities but none of them have had the desired impact.
